Title: Eat, Memory
Author: Amanda Hesser (edited by)

I like reading books about food.  I don’t know why really.  I’m not very adventurous when I eat.  I would be satisfied to eat Mac & Cheese every night and I think I have the least discerning taste buds ever.  That said, I enjoy food writing…which is why I decided to check this book out.

Eat, Memory: Great Writers at the Table, a Collection of Essays from the New York Times edited by Amanda Hesser is a good book of short stories about the writers’ experiences with food.  There were a number of very good stories, but my favorite was “A Not-So-Simple Plan” by Patricia Marx.  She wrote about a dinner party she once threw that was not perfect.  And this is not acceptable for Patricia Marx.  It was very funny to read, causing me to laugh out loud a couple of times.  An example:

And when I prepare for others, I prepare with abandon. My rule of thumb: The serving size per person is in fact twelve to fourteen times that indicated by the recipe.

heh heh. That’s a funny line.

Anyway…this is a nice book that is very simple to read.  Obviously all of the chapters are independent of each other, so you can just take a few minutes at a time to read the entire book.

My sister went to culinary school this year, so I have been on a JAG for these kind of books. I’m adding this one to my list.
