Book News: I Don’t Understand “Twilight”
August 23rd, 2009OK. I’m going to throw myself out there on this one. But before I do, I should mention that I have never read a book by Stephanie Meyer. I don’t understand the whole “Twilight” thing. I’ve read excerpts from the books and the writing seems adolescent. Maybe that’s the point…seeing how the books are targeted toward early teenage girls.
I have been reading about this copyright infringement suit that is going on with Stephanie Meyer and I think it’s a tough one. I feel like it is extremely unlikely that Meyer copied her book from this other girls stuff. My main reason for this opinion (and again, I am risking attack from fans…) is that I don’t think the idea for Twilight is particularly creative. Vampire stories aren’t new. Teenage monsters aren’t new (see: Teen Wolf!). So it’s not that big of a leap to write a book about moody, emo, teenage vampires. So…I’m not a big fan of the Twilight series as you can see.
Still…I’m sure this lawsuit will go away without much happening.
Now, tell me why I’m wrong about Twilight.

The more articles I read about this case, the more I sense that no one is really taking this case seriously, because of the lack of originality in the books. I find that incredibly hilarious.

I agree. Meyer’s vampire stories are pedestrian, and I simply do not get why they like eachother at all! He is distant and cold and even when he is declaring his love–it all seems somehow fake. I just want someone to tell me why she likes him? Or even why she would want to be a vampire. Maybe you have to read the books to get it and I haven’t. They are not characters with whom one would be empathetic. I keep waiting for the movies to be good. I want to like them but I find them empty, very empty. Even as fantasy I can’t buy into it. Mercy thompson (patricia briggs) or even Sookie Stackhouse are much better characters. I haven’t read the Charlaine Harris books either and I like the characters better.
