LOP News: More Kindle Stuff

June 2nd, 2009

Here’s a good column about the Kindle 2.0.  Basically he is saying that, while really super cool, hand held book readers have a long way to go.  From the New York Times:

The reading device of the future will surely be backlighted, unlike the Kindle, so you can read in the dark. It will have different typefaces, and will reproduce photographs and illustrations in something better than a murky gray wash. The read-aloud voice will learn how to pronounce “Barack Obama” and will have mastered a tone more expressive than that of the tiresome know-it-all who talks to you from inside your car’s G.P.S.

I think he is right, which is one of the reasons I have held off buying one of these. I think in 5 years there will be newer, more awesome versions out there that solve a lot of the problems I have been hearing about them.

Hopefully they will cost less than they do now as well…otherwise I still probably won’t buy it.

He’s absolutely right—the advancements will be tremendous. That said, I’ve had my Kindle for 2 months now and can’t imagine life without it. I’m sure I’ll upgrade way down the road, but for now, this little thing is amazing!
