Devoted readers of Letters on Pages know that I am a big fan of business books.  They tend to inspire me and make me think of new ideas and stuff.  So I generally give them easy ratings.  Unfortunately sometimes I come across books that are pretty dumb.  This is one of those books.

The Fearless Fish Out of Water: How to Succeed When You’re The Only One Like You by Robin Fisher Roffer is an OK book in theory. The basic idea is that it’s OK to be different in your work. In fact, you should embrace the fact that you feel like a fish out of water. It can be a big advantage to you as it sets you apart from other employees. Here’s my problem with the metaphor: when fish are out of water…THEY DIE!

I know I’m being nitpicky here, but I couldn’t get away from that thought as I read this book. Every time talked about it…all I could think about was the fact that fish die when they aren’t in water. I tried to get past it. I couldn’t. I’m not that good of a person.

It would have been better if the book was called “The Fearless Amphibian Out Of Water”, but that’s not very clever I guess. I’m sorry for the short, informationless, review…but I just couldn’t do this one very well.

Oh, and I wanted to let you know that I picked up the Columbine book yesterday…so far it’s fantastic. Thanks for the recommendation!
