Book News: More Digital Reader News

April 6th, 2009

Some inventor guy has come up with a new device for digital books! From The NY Times:

Bradley Inman wants to create great fiction, dramatic online video and compelling Twitter stream — and then roll them all into a multimedia hybrid that is tailored to the rapidly growing number of digital reading devices.

HA!!  Compelling Twitter streams!! There is no such thing!

Anyway…the point is to reimagine the experience of reading books. Sitting down in your favorite chair to get lost in spectacular writing isn’t good enough. Now the words need to jump off the screen and be intertwined with multimedia presentations! Of course, the writing no longer needs to be proficient:

Publishers are going to be confronted with the idea that either the words on the page have to be completely compelling on their own, or they have to figure out a way to create new sorts of subliminal draws in the new medium

What? How about not publishing books where the words on the page aren’t compelling! This whole idea makes me think that feel like it doesn’t matter if the writing is good…as long as it grabs my attention then it is OK to publish!

eh…not a huge fan of this idea.

It’s more evidence of what i call the ‘sesame street generation’. If it’s not moving quickly and colorfully, it doesn’t get their attention. I predicted this 25 years ago. Maybe we’ll eventually cycle back around to appreciating a real (and compellingly written) book.

That is a terrible idea! But yes, I agree that they think they will appeal to the new generations that way.The MTV generation that can’t look at anything for more than 5 seconds.

I think they will kill books.
