Book News: Borders Losing More Money

April 2nd, 2009

It’s rough out there for businesses that thrive on discretionary spending. From Bloomberg.com:

Borders Group Inc., the unprofitable bookstore chain that tried to sell itself last year, said fourth-quarter profit fell as consumers pared spending on books.

Well of course people are spending less money on books…and music…and food…and movies…and everything else!

Have you cut back your book spending? Are you using your local library more now?

nope…I have cut back on nothing…caution be damned!

It is my duty to spend money and encourage the economy.

I’m hording like a miser these days. So, I may be part of the problem, not the solution. And I have definitely made two changes in my book shopping habits:

    1) I’m spending less — either getting books from the library (just finishing the unabridged audio version of Crime and Punishment) or buying used.

    2) If I do buy a book, I make an effort to buy it from a local shop. So Borders isn’t getting my money these days, what little I am spreading around. But Powell’s is.

I have been using the library for everything. Don’t buy them anymore, just use them and return them. Never been much of a collector.

Sadly, I am still out of control in my book spending.
