Book News: Turn In Your Library Books!
January 27th, 2009You can file this story under “Obvious Things Not To Do”.
A lady checked out a book at the library…so far so good. She forgot to return it…hey, it happens sometimes. The library called and sent notes to her house to remind her of the overdue book. Then the library sent a certified warning letter to her house, which she refused to sign for. Then a police officer went to her house and told her daughter the book needed to be returned. She refused to comply. So naturally the next step…
SHE WAS ARRESTED!!
After another month passed, Boos advised Jesup library director Cindy Lellig and the library board that Koontz could be arrested on a theft charge. In Iowa, a fifth-degree theft charge, a misdemeanor offense, carries a maximum penalty of 30 days in jail and up to a $500 fine.
The alleged thief posted bond of $250 to get out of jail.
Part of me thinks this is hilarious because the book cost $13. But at the same time…it’s not that hard to return your library books. She claimed in a different report that she didn’t return them because she was too busy. Which is very funny.
So let it be a lesson to you…return your library books on time. Maybe next time the library won’t be so kind and will send a leg breaking goon after you!

Too busy to return a library book = too busy to *read* a library book = too busy to stop there and check out a book in the first place.
To think, she could have bought a newspaper instead and saved herself a lot of hassle.
