Book News: Not Many Books In Braille

January 7th, 2009

Here’s something I never really thought about…not very many books are translated into Braille.  You might think that is because they are just being produced as audio books. But you would be wrong to think that…and shame on you. According to the Guardian:

Just 4% of books published in the UK currently make it into Braille, large print or audio formats.

That’s too bad really. Luckily author Ian Rankin is working to remedy that problem by raising money and awareness.

Ian Rankin…you win the “Person of the Day” for January 7th, 2009!

i see that’s in the UK…got any stats for the US? I’m guessing it’s higher. Cracker Barrel alone has more than that in audio books!

I don’t know the US numbers. If you think about it, it’s actually not all that surprising considering the number of books that get published. Obviously all of the major books will be put on tape (at minimum)…but there are an awful lot of books at bookstores that aren’t!

With all the proffessional audio books available, I wonder if there are still organizations that have volunteers tape record books for the blind. I remember my mom doing that when I was a kid.

I really stopped by to say that I named you for the Premios Dardo Award! See http://rosecityreader.blogspot.com/2009/01/award-of-day-premios-dardo-award-aka.html for details.
