Title: My Word is My Bond
Author: Roger Moore
Publisher: Harper Collins (2008)

Hurray for James Bond stuff!! I love James Bond (I was trained at an early age to do so). I saw Roger Moore had a memoir coming out (coincidently released around the same time as the stupidly named, but somewhat entertaining, Quantum of Solace came out in theatres) so I figured I had to read it. Roger Moore isn’t really my favorite Bond (In order: Connery, Craig, Brosnan & Moore, followed by those other people who I like to pretend never made movies), but I didn’t really know much about him so I thought I would give it a go. It was entertaining, but nothing special.

This book had a lot of funny stories and seemed pretty honest, especially for a memoir. He was willing to talk about his faults, like bailing on a couple of wives. That sucks…but he generally seems like a pretty nice guy. For me, the best parts of the book were related to James Bond. I liked reading about the behind the scenes stuff. Unfortunately, he thinks Moonraker was a good movie…which it wasn’t. but I can let that slide. He talks a lot about his other projects too (obviously), which encouraged me to watch some old episodes of The Saint and The Persuaders (thanks YouTube!!). So that was fun. He spends a lot of time in the book talking about his work with UNICEF, which is cool. I respect that he was able to use his celebrity to accomplish something worthwhile.

The only significant complaint I have about the book was his tendency to name drop. He was friends, or at least acquaintances with A LOT of famous people. I understand that he is just telling his life story…and I understand that it is very difficult for someone famous to write their memoir without coming across as arrogant. Moore just seemed to name drop a lot. Not that big of a deal though as he doesn’t really strike me as arrogant in the book.

I liked this book. I actually think this book is a microcosm of Moore’s acting career. It was pretty fun to read…never got too deep…and when it was over I was happy I saw it. It is a must read for all Bond fans.
