Booking Through Thursday: Memorable First Lines
July 26th, 2008This week’s Booking Through Thursday asks:
What are your favorite first sentences from books? Is there a book that you liked specially because of its first sentence? Or a book, perhaps that you didn’t like but still remember simply because of the first line?
Great Question! As I thought about it, what became evident was that I liked the first sentence of books that I enjoyed reading. So apparently, I decide AFTER I finish a book if the first line is good or not. Anyway, besides “It was a dark and stormy night”…I’m fond of a couple first lines:
- “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” – The Bible. Excellent first line of an excellent book. Maybe I’ll review the Book of Genesis some day.
- “It was a pleasure to burn.” – Fahrenheit 451. A really eye catching line to a spectacular book!
- “It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.” – 1984. Actually, I am not a huge fan of this book. I understand the cultural impact it had, but it was boring to me. (Animal Farm…now that’s a book!) That said, I like off the wall stuff, like clocks striking thirteen.
Those are some of mine…what about yours?

I love the first sentence of 1984. And the Bible.
