As you can probably judge by the title, this is a book about golf. But not just any golf. No, this is about playing golf in the weirdest, strangest, most extreme places in the world. I don’t know that you have to be a big golf fan to enjoy the book…but I imagine if you aren’t all that interested in golf, then you won’t be interested in this book.

112 Miles to the Pin: Extreme Golf Around the World is 9 chapters of stories of golfers who go to the extreme to play the game they love. One man decided to golf all the way across Mongolia. He shot a 12,170…only 290 over par! Another group of people play in Antarctica. One chapter talks of playing a round in some of the harshest climate in Australia, where scorpions hid in the hole and the temperature often hits triple digits. And yes, there is mention of Alan Shepard playing on the moon.

The overriding theme between all of the golfers mentioned in this book seems to be that they don’t really care what score they shoot. Some of the people don’t even bother to keep score. They are just out there for fun. I suppose that is a good outlook on how to play golf, since most people just end up furiously mad the entire time they are out there. That said, I think you have to have at least some sort of talent to hit across all of Mongolia. It would take me 12 kabillion strokes to do that…considering I hit it about 50 yards and to the right every time. (In case you are wondering, that last sentence explains pretty well why I don’t like to play golf.)

This was a fun book that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys golfing and/or reading about other people golfing. It reads very quickly and is pretty funny. Duncan Lennard does a really nice job of telling these golfers’ stories.

“since most people just end up furiously mad the entire time they are out there.”?? I’m guessing that’s a personal critique of the game based on a 12 kabillion stroke round!! Sounds like a fun book, though, and i’m glad you mentioned that it’s funny instead of a documentory type–sounds good!
