Hug Your People by Jack Mitchell
April 16th, 2008Title: Hug Your People
Author: Jack Mitchell
Publisher: Hyperion (2008)

I got off on the wrong foot with this book. I think my mistake was reading the blurbs on the back cover. You see…there was one blurb written by Jim Nantz. Those who know me at all know how I feel about Jim Nantz. Not a fan. At all. So when I found out he liked the book…well, it put me in a bad place.
I was asked to read and review Hug Your People: The Proven Way to Hire, Inspire, and Recognize Your Employees and Achieve Remarkable Results by Jack Mitchell. I love business books…and I was an HR major in college…so this book is right up my alley. The only problem is that I didn’t really like it all that much. I mean, there was a lot of excellent advice in this book about how to be nice to your employees and stuff like that. But I felt like I had heard it all before.
One of my problems might have been that I was comparing the book to Zapp!, which is my all-time favorite business book. They are both about the same thing, getting the most out of your employees. I just felt Zapp! did a much better job at keeping me interested in what happened next.
Obviously, Mitchell is a master motivator and a fantastic CEO. He is able to run a successful company (3 clothing chains in the Northeast) mostly due to his ability to motivate his people to give the best customer service possible. He is really good at that. And that is why he has the credibility to write this book.
As I said…this book was fine. Nothing groundbreaking in what he wrote in this book though.
